The Alexandra Transit Village consists of approximately 443 newly built units. This village was intended to be used as part of the relocation programme and to provide temporary accommodation for people who lose their homes during fires or natural
disasters in Alexandra. In 2006, as the implementation of new projects geared up, current occupation of the land for these new projects became a problem. More temporary housing was needed. In addition a series of fires in the winter rendered many
homeless. It was decided that the storage facility, completed in May, be converted into temporary accommodation for those needing short-term shelter in the event of a disaster, freeing up much-need space in the Transit Village. |
