K206 Housing project

K206 is the largest housing project in Alexandra to date. The land, originally earmarked for a highway, stretches from the North of Alex (Marlboro) to the South (London Rd). 1760 affordable houses and 2150 rental rooms will be built in "cluster-style" developments. In this radical new approach, traditional community interaction can be preserved while exciting new concepts in urban design allow for the simultaneous increase in housing densities along with greater availability of open and shared community space.

2006:

November 22nd - the project is launched.

2010:

February - Approximately 1000 families have already been settled in their new homes in K206. Most of the residents are from the Iputheng cluster of schools and Setjwetla informal settlement camp, using the "block-by block" approach. Some of these photos were taken the day after families moved in.
