Joe Nhlanhla, one of the stalwarts of the struggle against apartheid and a son of Alexandra, was honoured on 26th June 2004. The events, held in Alexandra Township, comprised a street naming
ceremony marked by the slaughtering of cattle and lunch served at the corner of the newly-named Joe Nhlanhla and 12th streets. This event was open to members of the public, and targeted at bringing together a broad spectrum of South African leadership figures.
Nhlanhla, a former Minister of Intelligence, is currently ill. His condition raises a critical issue: recognising and honouring South Africans who have made a major contribution to the country and its people in their lifetime. Considering
Nhlanhla’s achievements, naming a street after this struggle stalwart and former cabinet minister is an emphatic testament to his contribution to the township and the country. |
