2007: Housing for the Disabled

Some 5% of the 7 000 new stands being made available for housing in Alexandra are being set aside for the disabled and the government has embarked on an education programme within the community, informing them how to access grants. Following the much publicized plight of a young girl, Refilwe Makau, who was born without legs, the ARP through the Department of Housing and a number of sponsors came together to build a house for Refilwe in Alexandra. As Refilewe is in a wheel chair, the doors were widened and a ramp, instead of a step, leads to the front door.
