Housed at an old fire station, Bombani was opened in August 2000 and offered support to abused women from the local community and other surrounding areas. However conditions were totally inadequate and a new shelter was built on the Far East bank of Alexandra. Built at a cost of R2.5 million, the Bombani was completed in five short months and was opened by the Gauteng Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane, on Sunday, 25 March 2007. It provides shelter for up to two weeks at a time, with counselling from professionals and medical care by resident nurses.
