Health

Four clinics offer primary health care: The Eighth Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Marlboro and East Bank clinics, all owned by the City of Johannesburg. The Alex Health Centre, offers a more comprehensive health service, and is owned by a non-governmental organisation. All five health centres have been upgraded. The Edenvale Hospital, about 2,5 kilometres away from Alex, is also being upgraded and new facilities being built.

An extensive HIV/AIDS programme has being undertaken which includes the establishment of two voluntary testing centres. A central social services office at 8th Ave has been established to improve the co-ordination of delivery.

New Ambulances 2004:

Emergency equipment and services: 3 ambulances purchased by the project were handed over at a function held on the 30 April 2004. There was only one ambulance operating in Alexandra and this will make a huge difference in the area.
