A full day Crime Summit was held at the Alexandra
Campus of the Central Johannesburg College on Saturday, 26 July. This
joint venture between the Alexandra Community Policing Forum and the
Alexandra Renewal Project aimed to inform the Alexandra community of
current issues surrounding crime in Alexandra. Reports included the
latest crime statistics and a strong call to local citizens to get
involved in combating crime. The audience was informed that criminal
elements had used the cover of xenophobic unrest to further their own
interests and that Alexandra's fledgling tourism industry has suffered a
serious setback with tours being cancelled as a result of the violence.
The Crime Summit was attended by representatives from the SAPS, JMPD,
Dept. of Justice, Dept. Correctional Services, Dept Education, Dept.
Social Services, Liquor Board, Gauteng Gambling Board, Gun-free Society
and the Human Rights Commission. |
