The storm water drainage system in "Old Alexandra" is aged, overused and abused (illegal sewage from informal settlements and factory effluent from nearby industry). In addition, the high density of housing and backyard dwellings, as well as illegal occupation of servitudes allows very little rainwater to sink into the ground.

The upgrading of the system has taken a high priority with repairs currently underway.
