Ekukhanyisweni was housed in an old run-down asbestos building. In keeping with new government regulations to ban and phase out the use of asbestos-containing products was demolished to make way for a new school. The new school was completed in 2006 and opened its door for the first time at the beginning of the 2007 school year with 1020 chidren.
