Alex Tourism

Tourism in Alexandra has been identified as an area that can greatly benefit the residents of Alex in terms of economic development. The ARP, together with the Alex Tourism Business Association (ATBA), and other partners including the Sandton Tourism Association have developed a strategy facilitating links between Alexandra businesses and residents and the growing tourism market in Gauteng. Such links include for example catering and hospitality service businesses, heritage sites and locations, entertainment nodes, a website etc. For more information please visit www.alextourism.co.za

2008 Alex Crime Summit

The fledgling tourism industry in Alexandra suffered a serious setback with tours being cancelled as a result of the recent violence. A full day Crime Summit was held at the Alexandra Campus of the Central Johannesburg College on Saturday, 26 July. This joint venture between the Alexandra Community Policing Forum and the Alexandra Renewal Project aimed to inform the Alexandra community of current issues surrounding crime in Alexandra.

Reports included the latest crime statistics and a strong call to local citizens to get involved in combating crime. The audience was also informed that criminal elements had used the cover of xenophobic unrest to further their own interests. The Crime Summit was attended by representatives from the SAPS, JMPD, Dept. of Justice, Dept. Correctional Services, Dept Education, Dept. Social Services, Liquor Board, Gauteng Gambling Board, Gun-free Society and the Human Rights Commission.
