More than R3-million has been set aside to upgrade sewer pipelines in Alexandra, and motorists have been asked to be patient while the work disrupts traffic.

JOHANNESBURG Water, the City's water and sanitation provider, has embarked on a multi-million rand project to upgrade sewer pipelines in Alexandra.

The sprawling township is on the banks of the Jukskei River, about 12 kilometres north-east of the city centre. According to the 2001 Census, about 170 000 people live in this ghetto, in an area of approximately two square kilometres.

Joburg Water has set aside an estimated R3,2-million for the upgrading of the sewer pipelines. Work has already started and is expected to be completed at the end of June.

The upgrade involves the installation of new sewer pipelines and increasing the size of existing pipelines.

"Due to the rapid growth of the Alexandra community a need arose to upgrade the sewer pipelines in order to ease the pressure on existing pipelines," explained Joburg Water's spokesperson, Jameel Chand.

The works are to take place in the area bounded by London Road in the south, Selbourne Street in the north, Third Avenue in the west and the Jukskei River in the east.

An open cut trench from Twelfth Street to Eleventh Avenue will cause traffic congestion in the area, and motorists are urged to use Eighth Avenue and Roosevelt Street, or London Road and Thirteenth Avenue as alternative routes.

"Johannesburg Water apologises for the inconvenience caused by the project and thanks motorists and residents for their understanding and patience," Chand said.
