Safety & Security Overview

Objectives

The Alexandra Renewal Project seeks to substantially reduce levels of crime and violence, so as to provide an environment which will create safe and secure conditions for all residents and facilitate better quality of living conditions in Greater Alexandra.

Details follow below

Targeted de-densification

This project involves the relocation of households living in unsafe and badly situated locations and the securing of the land once the relocation has been completed, so as to ensure that no further settlement occurs.

Basic SAPS service delivery

This project focuses on building partnerships between 'Business Against Crime' (BAC), Local Industrial and Business Associations, Local Government and Metropolitan Police Department, relevant Community Police Forums (CPF's), local hospitals and clinics, the SANDF and sister Departments within the Criminal Justice System. The key focus of the project is to address crime in a holistic manner, as well as to seek expertise and assistance in the private sector.

Refurbishment of Wynberg Police Station (phase 1)

New additions to the Wynberg Police Station create a suitable complex for the Detective Branch. Improvements include a reception area with suitable furniture, eight offices and an ablution block.

Expansions at the new Alex Police Station

This project involves expansion to the New Alexandra Police Station including additions to the top structure, public parking space and upgrading of perimeter security.

Logistic improvements at Wynberg Station (phase 2)

Additional improvements to the Wynberg Police Station including specialised facilities such as workshops, dog kennels etc for POPS and the Dog Unit; an indoor shooting-range for forensic testing and new technical equipment provided.

Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)

Establishing and managing a MPD Service Delivery Point (SDP) on the Far East Bank in Greater Alexandra. This project comprises providing technical equipment and vehicles to this Service Delivery Point.

Building Public Safety Partnerships

Focusing on multi-disciplinary partnerships for better safety and security conditions within the Region 7 / Greater Alexandra area. Seeking support and cooperation from large corporations that have made extremely high and valuable investments in the Sandton area.

Victim Support Structures (VSS)

This project involves providing support to victims of violent crime for example domestic violence, rape, assault and hijack victims.

Improvements to Traffic Safety Services

Provision of technical items in order to deliver a professional service including:

  • Upgrading of the building in terms of security precautions.

  • Upgrading perimeter fencing.

  • The provision of additional patrol vehicles.

Fire and Emergency Services

This facility in Alexandra consists of a relatively new building but the staff and station were inadequately equipped to deliver a quality service. Assistance includes provision of better and more emergency vehicles, building improvements such as repairs to leaking leaking roofs and the upgrading of communication equipment.

Disaster Management and Transit Camps

  • Extension of the Transit Camp on the Western side with the procurement of new land.

  • Formulation of an overall Disaster Management plan to address all relevant contingencies.

  • Establishment of a  suitable mobilisation store in order to professionally address disasters.

Phase Two Infra-Structure Improvements to Public Safety Facilities

  • Construction of gymnasium and additional storage facilities for the Fire and Emergency Services.
