From 3-10 July 2010, Alexandra will be host to the Football for
Hope Festival. The Football for Hope Festival 2010 will showcase and
promote best practice in the field of Social Development through
Football when 32 development teams from around the world compete in
Alex.
The impact of the Festival will be felt far beyond the FIFA World Cup.
In Alexandra, the Festival 2010 site will evolve into a Football for
Hope Centre, providing the infrastructure for the sustainable work of
a local organisation to the long-term benefit of the Alex community.
No.3 Square has been identified as a suitable location for the
Centre and is being developed as a youth precinct. Detailed plans are
underway to move the people living in an informal settlement on the
site into purpose-built new housing.
On completion this youth precinct will have a full scale football
pitch with a mini pitch, four Kombi courts (basket ball, netball,
volley ball), two tennis courts and an international standard skateboard
park. Spectator seating, floodlights and a full-service clubhouse,
together with an upgraded youth centre with hall, will complete the
precinct.
