Tourism Information Session
The Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP) and the Alex Tourism Business
Association (ATBA) recently hosted a full day Tourism Information
Session at the Alexandra Campus of the Central Johannesburg College.
Held on 17 July 2008, the Session was part of the ARP's Local Economic
Development (LED) programme.
Speakers included representatives from the Gauteng Tourism
Association (GTA), the Johannesburg Tourism Company (JTC), Tourism
Enterprise Partnership (TEP), Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) and
the Sandton Tourism Association.
The aim of the Session was to bring Alex business owners in the
tourism and hospitality sector into contact with these established
organisations, all of which promote tourism within Gauteng and are
ready to assist Alex's fledgling tourism industry.
One hundred and thirteen Alexandran entrepreneurs attended the
event. The approach throughout the day was "thinking out of the
box", with topics ranging from visions for tourism development in
Johannesburg to professional support and access to funding. The
afternoon was devoted to inspirational success stories.
"Emphasis was placed on the need for each local business in the
tourism sector to gain accreditation and to comply with established
standards," says ARP Deputy Director responsible for LED, Darlene Louw.

ATBA, a collective body representing the tourism sector in
Alexandra, is closely aligned with the aims and objectives of
Johannesburg Tourism Company and other structures in the tourism
institutional framework.
The Alexandra Tourism Development Project is a joint initiative of
the Alexandra Renewal Project, The Gauteng Tourism Authority, the City
of Johannesburg and the Department of Environmental Affairs and
Tourism.
