The RAW Deal
An abandoned ruin next to a park on Eastbank is being
transformed into a vibrant meeting place.
The ARP has tasked the Raw Foundation with this project.

"Stichting raw", based in the Netherlands, is a group of hands-on
architects/builders/designers with a desire to build and construct
where it's needed. The use of recycled, salvaged, found and donated
materials, from varying sources, and an environmental awareness are
the driving forces behind this organisation's approach to building.
This is evident in the use of gabion-type retaining walls constructed
from the rubble of the previous building.
Bart-Jan Hooft and Calanne Moroney of the RAW Foundation are being
assisted by workers drawn from the local Alex communty as part of the
ARP's Local Economic Development programme.
In addition to recreation, the space will be used for workshops. The
first workshop will be held during the development process and will
focus on the environmental rehabilitation of the property using a
permaculture method (the development of perennial agricultural systems
that mimic the structure and interrelationship found in natural
ecologies). Residents of Alex, in particular those that have entered
the current gardening competition in Ext. 7, will be invited.
The three month project is due for completion in mid- December 2007.
