The Greening Challenge
Extension 7 Gardening Competition
It has become a tradition in Alexandra to run a gardening
competition when families start moving into a new housing project. In
March 2007, the Extension 7 Gardening Competition was launched. This
is the 4th such competition and forms part of the ARP's focus on
environmental improvement through community participation.
Learning to garden in Alexandra is about more than simply
beautifying one's property. The competition gives new home owners an
opportunity to learn about plant selection and garden maintenance.
It's also about growing food to supplement the family's diet and
perhaps even supplementing one's income too.
The sponsors for this competition are ABSA together with the
National Housing Dept. Valuable input from other state organisations
such as the Departments of Environmental Affairs & Tourism and Water
Affairs & Forestry, as well as City Parks, who donate trees.
In June and August 2007 workshops on gardening were held. Grass was
donated to 565 households, and in August 565 fruit trees were donated
to competitors.
Residents have been keen to participate in the competition and already
both beautiful and practical gardens can be seen springing up around
Ext 7. Judging will take place in March 2008 with R10 000.00 and other
prizes up for grabs.
