PRESS STATEMENT ON
CARNIVAL POSTPONEMENT

At a joint seating of Alexandra Pan African Carnival team (APAC) (African Diaspora Forum / Alex Community Policing Forum) and a number of Alexandra community organisations, a consensus was reached to postpone the Alex Pan African Carnival that was scheduled to take place on Saturday, 27 September 2008.

The decision to postpone the event comes in the wake of public interest generated by the events leading up to the planned carnival.

Community structures that had not been a part of the planning have indicated interest in becoming active participants and contributors to the success of the carnival. It was due to this show of interest that the decision to postpone and to allow for further consultation as well as participation by all stakeholders was taken.

The new date for the Carnival will be communicated in the next few days.

The meeting further appointed an Interim Task Team made up of representation from community organisations present at the meeting, to help APAC identify other Alexandra community stakeholders to be included in the Carnival process. APAC, with the help of the Interim Task Team, is convening a meeting on Saturday, 27th September 2008, where they will present the Carnival to all interested Alex residents and organisations, and open the process to their full participation. This will ensure buy-in and ownership of the Carnival by the community.

The community organisations and structures identified by the Interim Task Team are listed below. The invitation is also extended to other organisations and interested groups that are not listed below.
