Alexandra
Pan African Carnival
Zoom on Alex Pan African Carnival
18 SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS
With the support of the Gauteng Department of Education, the
African Diaspora Forum, in conjunction with the Alexandra Community
Policing Forum, is organizing an intensive programme of workshops in
Alexandra 18 public schools.
Adopting countries:
Each of the 18 schools has adopted 3 African countries (so that all
of the 52 African countries are represented during the Carnival).
Each country is to be represented by 100 learners and educators
(i.e. 300 per schools).
The schools are going to spend 2 months learning about their
adopted countries’ history, geography, and culture.
Traditional Outfits:
The 100 learners and educators having adopted an African country
will be given a traditional outfit from this country, to be
manufactured in Alexandra. They will be wearing it for the Carnival’s
procession.
Pan African Parliament:
Learners will visit the Pan African Parliament in Midrand,
Johannesburg.
Each country, represented by the 100 learners and teachers, will
elect a child president and four members of his/her cabinet. This
child cabinet will be representing the African country adopted as well
as the school, in the media and in different public events.
The child cabinet will be chauffeur-driven to the Embassy, High
Commission of Consulate of the adopted African country, and received
there with all due honors.
They in return will invite the Ambassador, High Commissioner or
Consul to visit their school in Alexandra.
Promoting understanding:
Local leaders (councilors, civics, other organizations) will be
invited in the schools, together with ADF and CPF members, to
facilitate a discussion about ‘what happened in Alexandra and
elsewhere’ in May 2008.
Struggle activists having spent
time in exile in Africa will be invited to tell their stories in the
schools of Alexandra.
Celebrating cultural diversity:
Dancers, musicians or writers from
the adopted African country will be invited into the school to perform
and to teach about their culture.
Some learners and educators will
be invited into an African restaurant / house in Johannesburg, from
the country they have adopted. They will experience African
hospitality and be treated with an African meal.
