LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Carnival has an important local economic development component, which aims at promoting skill transfers and training, and at developing joint business initiatives between business people from Alexandra and from the African Diaspora.

Event Procurement:

Materials, equipment and skills, where possible, will be sourced from businesses in Alexandra thus providing a welcome capital contribution to their economy.

Promoting Tourism:

Overall, the Carnival is aiming at putting Alexandra on the map, and at promoting tourism by enhancing its image of a lively and welcoming township.

These initiatives are twofold:

1. Manufacturing Carnival outfits in Alex

Outfits for schools learners and educators will be manufactured jointly by tailors and seamstresses from Alexandra and from the African Diaspora.

2. African cuisine in Alex restaurants

Workshops for Alex restaurant and tavern owners, as well as caterers preparing for the schools, are organized to train Alex business people. They are going to be trained in preparing for a variety of African meals, so as to diversify their menu and attract a larger variety of customers.
