The Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP) in partnership with Alexandra
Community Police Forum (ACPF) hosted a summit on the weekend
(Saturday, 26 July 2008) at the Alexandra Central Johannesburg College
to address the state of crime in Alexandra.
The summit comes after the recent unrest in Alexandra. All speakers
agreed that a partnership between the police and the community needs
to be formed to combat crime in the area. The summit urged the
community of Alexandra to respect the rights of each and every
individual, no matter their country of origin or race.
“Tourism in Alexandra has taken a back seat because of the xenophobic
attacks, with foreigners now reluctant to visit the area. As ARP, we
needed to take charge of the situation by getting all the stakeholders
involved, including the community, to help find proactive ways to get
rid of crime in Alexandra,” said Darlene Louw, Deputy Director: ARP.
Resolutions were passed including the formation of a crime fighting
forum consisting of government departments, ACPF, Alex Youth Forum,
Alex Church Committee, Greater Alexandra Development Forum Alex
Chamber of Commerce, Alex based media, Ward Councillors and Ward
Committee.
A final document outlining all resolutions will be drafted by the ACPF
and circulated amongst stakeholders.
Various government departments including the Department of Home
Affairs, the Department of Justice and the Department of Education
attended the event as well as the Gun Free Society of South Africa,
Human Rights Commission, the South Africa Police Service and the
Johannesburg Metro Police Department.
