Alexandra clean-up campaign
The City of Johannesburg's Region E arranged a clean-up campaign
during March 2008 to encourage and assist the Alexandra community in
keeping their environment clean and healthy.
To assist the residents in dealing with the rat problem and other
health hazards, the campaign was carried out in three phases:
SCRAP CAR REMOVAL
Environmental Health and JPMD assisted residents in removing scrap
vehicles from their premises, and also removed abandoned wrecks on
pavements and streets, obstructing both pedestrian and road traffic.
YARD-TO-YARD EDUCATION
Alex Ward Committees and NGO’s approached residents in their areas,
requesting them to remove all unwanted items, such as old unused
stoves, fridges, mattresses, etc., and put them on pavement for
removal. Residents were urged to keep their yards and water taps in
order once unwanted debris and scrap had been removed.
CLEANING OF ALL THE HOT SPOTS
The cleaning was a joint multi-disciplinary initiative by NGO’s, Ward
Councillors and Committees, all the Municipal Owned Entities, Taxi
Associations, Department of Correctional Services and various
departments in the region.
