New Year's message

Updated: 18 January 2009

A message from the Acting Director of the Alexandra Renewal Project...

in Old Alex

  Neels Letter
ARP Acting Director

2008 was a fulfilling year for the ARP in that we were able to sustain the momentum in housing delivery and were even able to increase the tempo of delivery.

All the available land on the Far East Bank has now been developed or large housing projects are under construction and all will be completed by end 2009.

The developmental thrust will remain the provision of new and upgraded housing stock but the focus will shift towards Old Alexandra and more specifically the redevelopment of the M1 Madala, Helen Joseph and M2 Nobuhle hostels and one or two smaller developments.

Preparatory work will continue to ready the land in Linbro Park/Modderfontein for housing development beyond 2010 to ensure that the momentum in housing delivery is not lost.

Related social facilities and the provision of facilities to broaden the economic base in Greater Alexandra will continue to be part of new housing environments to ensure that sustainable human settlements are established in the process.

An exciting year with considerable challenges lies ahead but by working together with the community we will be able to overcome those and ensure that the lives of more people are going to see an improvement in 2009.
