What's happening in Alex?

Focus in October 2007 on Pan Africa and Extension 7

It's often hard to judge the extent of progress in a big project such as the ARP. This month we focus on two specific areas of Alexandra - Extension 7 and the Pan Africa Taxi & Retail Development. The speed and extent of the development in both areas is phenomenal, and the pictures say it all...

Extension 7:

The Extension 7 Housing Project is located in the East Bank area of Alexandra. The aim is to develop housing for households that are living in hazardous conditions or on land that is needed to develop public spaces or engineering services.

End of October 2007:
To date over 1000 families have been relocated to Ext 7. This photo shows the area that was bare veld a mere 2 years ago. The construction in the foreground is a bridge and Marlboro station for the Gautrain.

Pan Africa Taxi & Retail Development:

A taxi rank and taxi holding facility for 1000 vehicles, public open market with 650 stall holders and 8000m² of commercial space are being built. The development of this property will significantly reduce congestion problems associated with hawking and taxis in the area.

Pre-construction:
Existing structures at the old "Putcoland" bus terminus in Pan Africa were demolished and a detailed planning framework developed.

May 2007:

Excavation and leveling of the site was more complicated than originally anticipated. Older structures and tankers were discovered underneath the slabs of the old buildings when they were demolished.

End of October 2007:
