Compiled: February 2007 | See individual excerpts for link back to original source

In the wake of the National and Provincial Budget announcements, as well as statements on the occasion of the opening of the Gauteng Legislature, the following is a brief compilation of excerpts from the media that relate directly to the Alexandra Renewal Project, housing development and urban renewal in general:

Housing
By June there will be no more bucket toilets in Gauteng, Shilowa said. He told the legislature that just 29 households still use the "abhorrent bucket system" and these will be gone by June.

"Of the 12 332 households identified last year as still using the bucket system, 12 303 of them now have decent sanitation."

Shilowa said that in the next financial year, 25 159 serviced sites will be provided in informal settlements and 58 552 houses will be built. "Together this will benefit close to 300 000 people."

Mixed-income settlements are being built in at least 13 areas "to promote social integration and to create opportunities for the poor in the mainstream housing market".

The Alexandra renewal project will be extended to the end of the 2009/10 financial year. So far, R1,2-billion has been spent on this, and there are currently 26 infrastructure projects and 12 housing projects being implemented in Alexandra.

4. URBAN RENEWAL PROGRAMME
Our Urban Renewal Programme in Alexandra, Evaton, and Bekkersdal are on track. Drastic measures are being taken to improve service delivery. The best practices gained in Alexandra are being applied in other urban renewal projects.

The Premier has announced our strategic decision to add Winterveldt to our list of Urban Renewal projects. In partnership with the City of Tshwane, we are currently conducting a pre-feasibility study to determine areas of interventions and develop a comprehensive plan for the rejuvenation of Winterveldt.

Alex Urban Renewal
We are proud to announce that the entire Alexandra has been turned into a construction site. Our delivery has been accelerated and currently there are 38 active projects including the Pan-Africa Taxi Retail development, Marlboro RDP High Density Housing and M2 Hostel Redevelopment.

Projects that will be carried in the next financial year include the following: Presidents Place Social Housing, HIV/AIDS Hospice, Marlboro rental units, Nokuthula Full Resource Centre and upgrade of Old Age Homes.

THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING
The provision of affordable housing on well located land forms a critical part of our overall effort to build sustainable communities. Furthermore, housing has an important influence on overall economic performance and the quality of life in our communities.

The Department of Housing this year receives additional allocations to accelerate programmes to formalize informal settlements, provide social housing and ensure adequate funding for urban renewal programmes in Alexandra, Bekkersdal and Evaton.

We are allocating R 750 million over the MTEF to intensify our programme of urban renewal in Alexandra, Bekkersdal and Evaton.

As indicated by the Premier in the State of the Province Address to the Legislature, the Department of Housing will begin a process to do a feasibility study and conclude a business plan for the regeneration of Winterveld.

Comrade Speaker the total budget for the Department of Housing is R 2.6 billion. In the two outer years of the MTEF it increases to R 3 billion and R 3.4 billion respectively.
